How do you make a storage ottoman?
I was wondering how you make an ottoman, just curious, like the ones that are padded with the flip up top.

buy a 1/2 half whiskey barrel planter

Ohhhh, can't believe someone asked this.
I made one years ago when they did not exist in any store!
I built a box out ot plywood- with simple butt joints of glue and screws. Measure down from the top about 1/5 the way down. Scribe a line all around on this line.Saw the box open; now you have a lid and a base that match perfectly.
Use sheet padding for the sides - just use a staple gun and tack it on.
For the top, use foam -I used 4inch thick so make a good seating area too. Where you get the foam, you can get a glue to adhere the foam to the wood. Foam sources: upholstery shop or JoAnns Fabric or places like that.
For the cover of the lid, place the fabric- something that will wear well- like denim or a plastic leather-
drape it over the top, fit the corners, tack 1/2 inch of fabric onto the rim where it will meet the bottom rim.
For the bottom, wrap the fabric around, like wrapping yourself in a bath towel; tack to the rim as for the top; tack to the underside.
I attached casters to the bottom. I attached hinges to the inside of the lower and upper box- a piano hinge works well if the top is heavy, otherwise just 2 strong hinges. I attached a piece of thin chain on each side and the corresponding point on the lid so the top would not fall open backwards, Then I painted the insides to seal them. It works great and since I made it, it is the perfect size for us. The whole thing took less than one weekend and it was not the only thing I did- oh, and back then, all I had was a small power hand saw to do the cutting.
Make a day trip to Ikea, buy one you like, have lunch in their cafeteria. I like the Swedish meatballs. Go home, assemble it and you are done. No muss, no fuss.
